Spencer and I trained together in Level I IFS through the Institute along with working together consistently in weekly groups for a little over a year. During that time I have enjoyed the unique style Spencer brings to IFS which always includes space, curiosity and [facilitating] without an agenda which allows the client to truly be Self-led and strengthens their Self-to-part relationships–the truly important part of the model.
Spencer also does a great job of exploring and doing his own parts work outside of sessions with clients to ensure phenomenal care and Self is provided to client while in session. I highly recommend Spencer for IFS!
I was an active Interactive Group member for about 2 years. During this time, I learned, deepened and explored my emotional everything skills. Clearest in my mind is the skill of real-time emotional honesty. Being conscious of my feelings in the moment and feeling safe enough to express them to others in a genuinely honest way. This skill has been the trailhead and compass to my professional success and personal happiness….
This group offers practical, easy and fun interaction that you won’t realize is helping you until you start asking for raises at work without panicking. Highly recommended.
It feels easy to trust that Spencer will meet anything that shows up—regardless of whose system it shows up in—and that he has both the confidence and experience to navigate through it all in creative, adaptive, sensitive and skillful ways. One of the benefits of working with someone in such relentless pursuit of his own evolution is that he is constantly refining and reflecting back into his work what he discovers through his own path of self-leadership. Anyone who is curious about their inner workings certainly has something to gain.
Spencer is my rock. When I’m overwhelmed, blending with various parts and in emotional pain, I know Spence is always there, never judgy, always stable and compassionate as he leads me through the IFS model.
Spencer’s interactive group was a great opportunity for me to practice having more awareness of my body and parts (IFS) in relation to others in the group. It was a safe and accepting space to voice what was alive in us in the moment, let things land, and notice our responses to this process. Did we feel vulnerable after sharing authentically, afraid of what might happen next, or just go blank? or emboldened in speaking our truth? And what was our response to other people’s sharing? Did it frustrate us, did we zone out, or did we want to lean in and rescue them?
The spaciousness Spencer creates allowed for an embodied exploration of oneself and our patterns. Also, with the gentle pace I was able to become more aware of automatic relational habits of mine and with this now increased awareness start the process of bringing about personal change. I learned important things about myself in every group session and had lovely and occasionally deep healing moments with all the other participants.
I have participated in authentic communication circles before, and I found the IFS aspect of Spencer’s offering to be the missing piece….A healing has taken place for me. I gained insight from interacting with others in the group and an ability to learn, which Spencer brings to the circle.
If you are interested in connecting with others on a deeper level, receiving guidance from someone who is trained and models IFS, then I’d highly recommend this experience!
Participating in Spencer’s interactive group is like settling into a space that’s safe to slow down in and get curious about the discomfort that we often spend the whole day avoiding. Sharing what’s happening in the present moment, we learn to hold space for ourselves and others. I feel there’s space to notice the nuances of communication, both internally and between people, and this brings a sense of gentle curiosity that’s often lacking.
Spencer crosses IFS and NVC in a way that both trainings support and reinforce each other. This makes his way to practice IFS quite unique, centered on the person, non-judgmental, focused on presence and body sensation. In private sessions, I felt supported and heard. I had space to listen and feel what was acting up inside me. In groups, he’s calm and open, non-directive, and usually prefers to leave some space for people to show up by themselves. If necessary, he can address someone in a way that the person can feel freedom to answer. He’s also available for any questions between sessions if needed. I will definitely recommend Spencer to anyone who’s looking for a gentle approach to IFS.
Spencer is very dedicated to the IFS model he leads many groups and help teach the IFS model to people on a daily basis. He also knows his parts very well and does his own work. When I had the opportunity to work with him he spoke for his parts beautifully. When I got to see him work with clients he was able to keep the safe space. In IFS there is a saying the slower you go the deeper the healing and Spencer took his time to get to know every part and let them know they were heard!
I have highly enjoyed working with Spencer. He explains concepts in a way someone who doesn’t know much about [IFS] can follow easily. I have been continually surprised by little details he remembers or picks up on, some of which have revealed something important about myself I was having trouble figuring out on my own. He is always attentive during a session–I have never felt like he was distracted or disrespectful of my time. He has also shown kindness, curiosity and acceptance towards the parts he helps me work with. Overall, Spencer has provided a wonderfully calm environment for me to explore parts of my personality I want to get to know better. I have found working with Spencer to be very helpful.
Spencer is very kind and creative. With calm confidence he is very capable of leading one in the exploration of internal experiences. I value his genuine acceptance of whatever shows up, and gentle curiosity and guidance.
I’ve been doing 1 on 1 and group sessions with Spencer and enjoy them very much. I like that Spencer adapts his approach to my needs and that we have found a nice balance between different modalities like NVC and IFS, as well as between lightheartedness, humor and deep topics/exploration. I’ve felt safe and open to share from early on working with Spencer and I think a lot of that is down to his calmness, curiosity and empathy. He’s helped me both doing exploration during the sessions, as well as showing me strategies to connect with my parts during my day to day. Looking at my journals from when we started and comparing now, I feel happier and find that life’s just easier in general, such as feeling less worry and pressure and I know a lot of that is down to the work I’ve done with Spencer. Because of that I wouldn’t want to work with anyone else and can highly recommend him.
Spencer’s voice and presence consistently remind me of the importance of slowing down and reconnecting with myself. I was introduced to the concept of NVC (Non-Violent Communication) by Spencer. NVC has helped me identify the emotions and needs that were obscured by childhood trauma. However, learning about NVC and applying it are two different challenges. Also, finding the words to describe our inner world allows us to reclaim our power. Spencer’s words serve as a gentle reminder of how I can integrate IFS (Internal Family Systems) and NVC to articulate my inner experiences. I highly recommend Spencer to anyone seeking tranquility and a way out of feeling stuck.
Spencer has been an amazing coach on my journey. After trying a few different therapists, I found that his gentle, curious approach really helped create space for doing the work of discovering, learning about, and accepting the various parts of myself. His reliability, consistency, and care have helped generate so much healing and evolution for me, in powerful and lasting ways. And even though this process is so often two steps forward, one step back, he has always been patient and full of trust in that motion. Spencer seems to have a lot of faith that ultimately the healing, learning, and growth will come from me, so his approach cultivates trust in my Self and helps me listen to all my parts in a more compassionate and nurturing way.

About IFS Practitioner
I began training in Internal Family Systems and Nonviolent Communication in 2018, initially using these methods for my own inner work. I began developing peer groups to meet my needs for growth, and to spread these models to people in the communities that I was involved with.
Using IFS with myself, I was able to experience large shifts.
I used to experience a harsh, contemptuous inner critic on a daily basis. As of this writing, I oftentimes find it easy to forget (and hard to remember) what that was like after several years now of a much more positive and encouraging inner voice in my daily experience.
Using IFS, NVC and authentic relating, I have discovered my own capacity to act from a place of more confidence and comfort, free to express myself and assert my preferences while maintaining openness, consideration and care for the feelings, needs and preferences of others. Since discovering these tools and implementing them for myself, I have had closer more meaningful connections with others than at any time in my life before.
In addition to working with my clients and maintaining a regular schedule of group opportunities, I am currently focused on producing new materials through books, podcasts, workshops and demonstrations.
I am currently living in the suburbs just outside of Toronto, Canada. I enjoy participating in the Toronto improv community as a performer in theatre shows, producer of independent shows and as a student eager to improve. I enjoy hiking with my old yellow lab, Toby.
